I used to read Tolkein’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy religiously every couple of years. I’ve read “The Hobbit”, “The Silmarillion”, and more than a little bit of “The History of Middle Earth”, but it was always “The Lord of the Rings” that most caught my imagination. Yeah… I’m a geek. But then the movies came out and not only was I too lazy to go through the effort, but also, it wasn’t as unique a thing to do anymore. Suddenly everyone is reading these books.
So, it’s been a while since I read the books and I’m not as educated as I once was. I’m sorry to say, that while I was watching one of the movies with friends the other night, something struck me odd… “Something” being the entire premise of the movie.
The movie explains that long ago, the elves created the great rings of power, but that the evil Sauron secretly made a ‘master ring’. Does this seem really immature to anybody else? It’s like something my 8 & 9 year olds would play.
“I’ve got a ring of power!”
“Well I’ve got a master ring of power!”
“Oh yeah! Well I have an enchanted cameo locket that EATS master rings!”
“OH YEAH!!!!”
